Tire Swap vs. Tire Changeover: On-Rim or Off-Rim, and Which One You Need

"I need my tires swapped." Simple enough, until someone asks, "Are they on rims?" and you're not sure. That one question decides almost everything about a seasonal tire change: what the job involves, how long it takes, and what it costs. Here's the difference between an on-rim swap and an off-rim changeover, and how to tell which one you need.

If your winter tires are already mounted on their own set of rims (steel or alloy), a changeover is just a wheel swap. The car is lifted, each wheel comes off, the other wheel goes on, and every lug nut is torqued to spec. Pressures are set and the tires checked. That's it.

• Fastest option. No tire ever comes off a rim.
• Easiest on the tires. Beads and sidewalls aren't stretched over a rim twice a year.
• No balancing needed in most cases, because each tire stays balanced on its own rim.
• Cheapest per season, once you've bought the second set of rims.

If you own one set of rims, the tires themselves have to be changed. Each summer tire is dismounted from its rim, the winter tire is mounted in its place, and every wheel is balanced before it goes back on the car.

• Takes longer: mounting and balancing four tires is real work.
• Needs a tire machine and a balancer, which is why many people assume it has to be done at a shop. It doesn't, if the mobile service carries the equipment.
• More wear and tear on the tire beads and on rims, and a small risk to TPMS sensors, each time it's done.
• Costs more every season, which adds up over the life of the tires.

• Look at the stored set. If your off-season tires are sitting in the garage as complete wheels (tire plus metal rim), you need an on-rim swap. If they're just rubber tires with a hole in the middle, you need an off-rim changeover.
• Check last year's invoice. "Mount and balance" on the bill means off-rim. "Seasonal swap" or "wheel changeover" usually means on-rim.

If you keep your car for more than a couple of winters, a dedicated set of winter rims usually makes sense:

• Every changeover afterward is a quicker, cheaper on-rim swap.
• Your good alloy rims stay out of the salt and slush.
• Your tires last longer without being mounted and dismounted twice a year.
• You can switch on short notice when the cold comes early.

If your car has a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), ask about sensors for the winter rims too, or the warning light may stay on all winter.
